Fish feed
We can grow all our own fish food.

Feeding fish in an aquaponics system is a critical part of keeping them healthy and happy. There are various ways to feed fish, including using homegrown fish feed options. Let’s explore some of these methods:
- Commercial Fish Feed: This is a type of fish food specially made for different fish species. It comes in pellets or flakes and provides all the essential nutrients that fish need to grow. You can easily find commercial fish feed at pet stores or agricultural supply shops.
- Homegrown Fish Feed – Mealworms: Mealworms are the larvae of darkling beetles. You can raise mealworms at home to feed your fish. They are rich in protein and make a tasty treat for the fish.
- Black Soldier Fly Larvae: Black soldier fly larvae are another excellent option for homegrown fish feed. They are high in protein and easy to raise. Fish love to eat these nutritious larvae!
- Duckweed: Duckweed is a tiny floating plant that grows quickly and provides a great source of food for fish. You can easily cultivate duckweed in a separate container and feed it to your fish.
- Earthworms: If you have a compost bin or a worm farm, you can use earthworms as a nutritious snack for your fish. They are full of protein and other essential nutrients.
- Kitchen Scraps: Some kitchen scraps can also be fed to fish, like fruit and vegetable peels. Make sure not to feed them foods that are harmful to fish, like onions or citrus fruits.
- Azolla – similar to Duckweed, Azolla is a floating plant which produces a lot of material very fast from just water and dung.
- Manure – fish can even be fed manure such as chicken dung or cow dung. See the links below for more details.
Remember these tips when feeding your fish in an aquaponics system:
- Feed the fish a few times a day, but only give them what they can eat in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding.
- Monitor the fish’s behavior and the water quality regularly to ensure they are healthy and the system is balanced.
- Offer a variety of food to give the fish a balanced diet.
Using homegrown fish feed options is a great way to provide natural and nutritious food to your fish while also being sustainable and resourceful. Happy fish-feeding in your aquaponics system! 🐟🌱
